The University QMS Certification Process

The University of Nairobi has received the ISO9001:2015 certification from KEBS, the Certification Body, marking a milestone for the Quality Management System (QMS).

The new standard provides many benefits to the University, including integration of risk based thinking into the processes, improved evidence for decision making, creating a quality culture, engagement of staff and students, improvement of customer satisfaction, and improvement in the credibility and image of the University.

But what does it take to get the certification?

The publication ofthe ISO9001:2015 Standard, in September 2015 necessitated areview of the University QMS. There was need to align the QMS with the new standard.

In order to carry out a comprehensive review, a QMS Review Committee was appointed by the University Executive Board (UEB). The Committee, chaired by the Deputy Management Representative, Christopher Moturi, comprised experienced Internal Quality Auditors.

The first phase required a clear understanding the ISO9001:2015 Standard, identification of the activities to be undertaken and the resources required, and the development of the methodology to be used.

The Committee reviewed many relevant documents. Key among these were the requirements of the ISO9001:2015 Standard, guidelines on how to transition to the Standard, University of Nairobi Charter, CUE University Regulations, CUE Standards and Guidelines, University Strategic Plan,Performance Contract and Service Delivery Charter.
