Global South Culture Immersion programme Launched at UoN

Tsinghua University students at UoN on Monday Aug 27, 2018

Tsinghua University and the University of Nairobi, the leading universities in Asia and Africa respectively signed a Memorandum of Understanding on September 1, 2017 to engage in cooperation and exchange in cooperative education and research activities for the mutual benefit of both institutions.

UoN officially welcomed 20 students and 2 faculty members from Tsinghua University for the Global South Culture Immersion Program at the University of Nairobi on Monday 26th August, 2018.

In nurturing this collaborative partnership with Tsinghua University, UoN has planned a two weeks program for 2 faculty and 20 students from Tsinghua from 26th August to 8th September, 2018. The program aims to expose the students and faculty to the Kenyan Regional Organizations, Government and Politics, State and Civil societies, Culture, Gender, Governance Bilateral Relations, Development milestones and Kenya’s foreign policy among other topics. During their stay at the University for the two weeks, the Tsinghua University Faculty and Students will receive a range of Lectures from UoN Professors and Lecturers and visit various sites for them to experience Kenya.

As part of the realization of the MoU between the University of Nairobi and Tsinghua University, UoN has been sending two (2) students annually to Tsinghua University to  Experience China Summer School Program since 2017.


In his welcome remarks, Prof. Isaac Mbeche, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs representing the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi indicated that the University of Nairobi is keen on nurturing the MoU with Tsinghua University and further benchmark with Tsinghua University on harnessing student potential and career dreams. Established in 1988, the Tsinghua University Career Development Center (CDC) is one of the best career office set-ups that UoN can benchmark against. The recently launched Office of Career Services at UoN will be responsible to educate the undergraduate and postgraduate students on their career development and employment.



The University of Nairobi values the partnership with Tsinghua University and looks forward to a fruitful partnership experience with Tsinghua with implementation of the various activities outlined in the MoU including deepening the exchange of students, exchange of Faculty and Researchers, Global South Culture Immersion Program and the Experiencing China Summer Program.


Xiling Li from the International Office at Tsinghua University indicated that this is a great experience for the students to learn about Africa. This is the second time the University is sending its students for the Global South Culture Immersion Programme in Africa with the first visit being in Ghana.


In his concluding remarks, Prof. Mbeche requested the UoN students present at the welcome meeting to organize a forum for interaction with the Tsinghua University.
