Welcome to the Department of Paediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics.

The Department of Paediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics was established in 1980 as a division in the then Department of Dental Surgery, Faculty of Medicine to train undergraduate students in the disciplines of paediatric dentistry and orthodontics. It went on to become a fully fledged Department in the Faculty of Dental Sciences in 1996. In 2006, the Faculty of Dental Sciences was upgraded to a School and the Department of Paediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics became one of the four constituent Departments of the School of Dental Sciences.

The Department comprises of two Divisions namely;

The two divisions complement each other in the training of professionals to meet the oral health needs of children in the community. This is achieved by the competitive and quality academic programmes offered by the Department.

The Department trains undergraduate students in the disciplines of paediatric dentistry and orthodontics. However, with realization of the fact that over 60% of the Kenyan population comprises of children less than 15 years, the Department pioneered a Masters Programme in Paediatric Dentistry in 2000 to provide for specialist oral health care for children and attempt to improve on the specialist: patient ratio which currently stands at 1:7 million paediatric patients.

The Department offers the following Post graduate academic programmes:

Masters in Paediatric Dentistry, MDS(Paediatric Dentistry) Ph.D in diverse areas of Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics

In fulfillment of her social responsibility, the Department organizes community outreach services whose aim is to provide dental services to the less fortunate, and to children with special needs in various children's' homes in Nairobi.

The Department encourages innovative and creative thinking among its academic staff and students. Collaborative research therefore is ongoing within  the Department, and through the Masters and PhD Programmes diverse studies have been carried out in areas that touch on the epidemiology, of oral diseases in children, other studies being clinical and//or laboratory based in nature.  Some of the findings arising from these studies have been published in peer-reviewed journals.

Within the mission of the Department is active participation in National Health Policy formulations that will improve on accessibility and management of oral health for children in Kenya through evidence accruing from quality research.  Further, the Department looks to developing and reinforcing partnerships and linkages with other institutions and stakeholders who have an interest in oral health for children.
