UoN and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University to Collaborate

On Tuesday, September 13, 2016 a team from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), South Africa paid a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi in his office.

The Courtesy call was in preparation for the High Level Reference Group Meeting of the Fisheries Law Enforcement Academy (FishFORCE) Academy in Mombasa, Kenya, on November 23-24, 2016 and proposed Joint Collaboration between UoN and NMMU in addressing fisheries crime and support the Blue Economy.

 

University of Sierra-Leone to Collaborate with UoN to Enhance Capacities

The University of Sierra Leone Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ekundayo J.D. Thompson paid a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor, University of Nairobi, Prof. Peter Mbithi, on Monday, September 12, 2016 in his office to discuss collaboration between the two institutions. 

During the courtesy call, the two Vice chancellors agreed that the two institutions will collaborate on engineering and mining.

They also discussed various issues relating to University operations like performance contracting, strategic planning, webometrics ranking, university funding and advancement office, research uptake, student mentorship, curriculum development review, automation and Internationalization of the University.

NOREB Discusses Partnership with UoN

UoN Advancement, Director's office with NOREB executives at Uasin Gishu on Tue 6th Sep, 2016

On Tuesday 6th September 2016, a team from the University of Nairobi, Advancement Office met sixteen County Executives from the North Rift Regional Economic Block (NOREB) at the Uasin Gishu County offices in Eldoret. The aim of the meeting was to discuss possible areas of collaboration with NOREB Counties. NOREB is a regional economic block in the northern part of the Rift Valley comprised of eight counties namely; Turkana, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, West Pokot, Samburu and Trans-Nzoia.

UoN Student’s Innovation to be Commercialized

Roy Alela, UoN student demonstrating how the sign language to speech translation works at TICAD VI

Ernest Kimani, a UoN student, was among three students who showcased innovations at the 6th Tokyo International Conference on African Development, TICAD VI. His innovation was a phototherapy machine; the machine has been developed to help treat Jaundice on newborn babies. The photo therapy machine was developed at UoN’s Fabrication Lab. 

 

Prof. Peter Mbithi appointed Chair of ESDA Consortium during TICAD VI

The University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor, Prof. Peter M.F. Mbithi has been appointed chair of ESDA Consortium. The election which took place during the last ESDA conference in Kumasi, Ghana saw Prof. Mbithi win unanimously. The President of the Consortium was to take over in August during the TICAD VI Conference.

 

Youth Enterpreneurship Forum at TICAD VI

The University of Nairobi in partnership with Ministry of Youth, Gender and Public Service, Africa Development Bank and United Nations University, Tokyo, co-hosted the TICAD Youth Entrepreneurship Forum.

The Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe and President of Kenya, H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta graced the occasion.  The Conference was attended by 34 Presidents and Heads of Governments with over 10,000 delegates in attendance.

 

French Minister Visits UoN

The Minister of State Development and Francophonie, Hon. Andre Vallini, on Friday, August 26, 2016 through the Sub- department of French at the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) delivered a public lecture as well as paid a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor.

Hon. Andre Vallini interacted with the University of Nairobi students who are studying French.  The French Minister said that the main objective of the interaction with the students and his visit is to expand the study and the use of French. He said his role as a Minister is to defend and promote francophonie not only in French-speaking countries but also English-speaking ones.

Hon. Vallini said that their Minister of Education has put up an Alliance Francaise in France that will enhance students and staff exchange programme between Kenya and France. He added that The French Development Agency (AFD) and the Ministry of Education have signed an MoU that will enhance education of French in Kenya and particularly in the University of Nairobi.

He applauded the availability of a resource center at the sub- department of French that is supporting and training the trainers of French at CHSS.
