SCI hosts a Successful Regional Workshop on WSNs

The School of Computing and Informatics played host to a very successful Workshop on Applications of Wireless Sensor Networks in Weather Monitoring in East Africa (the first one of its kind in the Region).  The Workshop attracted participants from Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Kenya. The participants were composed of researchers, professionals and students (undergraduate and postgraduate) from both computer science and meteorology.  The 3-day (July 6-8) workshop was aimed at equipping the participants with practical skills on how to use wireless sensor networks to forecast/monitor weather.

Student innovations in science exhibitions

The Department of Architecture and Building Science participated in the annual National Council for Science and Technology (NCST) exhibition, held recently at KICC. The theme of the exhibition was “Universities as centers of innovation”. On display were three different projects by students and seminar presentations by staff.  Among the projects were “meals on wheels”, a project by Chispine Makana, whose aim was to provide street-food vendors with a portable, affordable alternative to handcarts. The second project was by Nicholas Tallam on Turbo Hydraulic.

 

The exhibition was organized by the NCST and officially opened by the minister for Higher Education, Science and Technlogy, Prof. Hellen Sambili who toured UoN stands among others. 

Seeding Labs Donation To Department Of Chemistry

Seeding Labs which is based in Boston, Massachusetts in the United States of America is a non-profit Organization that provides affordable research equipment and training assistance to scientists in developing countries since 2003. This is to help build capacity for teaching and research in the sciences.

It recently donated an assortment of glassware ( glass bottles, filter flasks, conical flasks, volumetric flasks, round bottomed flasks, separating funnels, beakers, test tubes, droppers, , pipettes) and other pieces of equipment

Donation From Seeding Labs – USA To The School Of Biological Sciences, University Of Nairobi

SBS has receive equipment worth Kshs. 3,500,000/= from Seeding Labs, a consortium of American Institutions which helps to collect laboratory equipment and supply them to the developing world.  The equipments that SBS has received will go a long way in bringing about collaboration between Kenyan’s (members of the School) and their American counterparts.

According to the MOU between Seeding Labs and School of Biological Sciences, each academic staff member is expected to examine the equipments in their area and then write a proposal in collaboration with an American Researcher.  The Seeding Labs will facilitate linkage between the two researchers.

The equipments received will boost molecular biology and technology research in our country.
